American Merchant Sailors vs Pirates

Pirates have been very active this past week, capturing 6 ships, including a US flagged merchant vessel carrying emergency supplies to Dafur Kenya.

UPDATE: The Captain of the Maersk Alabama is still a hostage onboard his ship. The crew has control of the ship and are holding one pirate. The US Navy ships are enroute (but where 300 NM away at the time of the attack).

Correction:

according to the BBC:

"It is reportedly the first time in 200 years that a US-flagged vessel has been seized by pirates.

The Associated Press quoted a defence official as saying: "The crew is back in control of the ship.

"It's reported that one pirate is on board under crew control - the other three were trying to flee."

Reports suggest the other three pirates jumped overboard."

Lesson for pirates,
Don't Mess With Alabama.

The White House response to the taking of an American ship:

A presidential spokesman says the White House is assessing a course of action to resolve the hijacking of a U.S.-flagged ship off the coast of Somalia.

Press secretary Robert Gibbs said Wednesday that the White House was monitoring the incident closely. Said Gibbs: “Our top priority is the personal safety of the crew members on board.”
The White House offered no other immediate details about what actions it was considering.

Very Weak.

Fortunately the ship was manned by real Americans, who saved themselves.

Then again, the ship was carrying food for BO's homeboys in Kenya, so maybe BO will allow a strong response by the US Navy.
